Growing, preparing and cooking artichokes

I am not ashamed to admit I love growing artichokes and, most of all, eating them. If you would like to explore how to grow and cook this undervalued vegetable yourself, then this 2 hour session, including tasting some of our favourite artichoke dishes, is one not to miss.

Time & Location

07 Jun 2026, 10:30 – 12:30

Vine House, 39 Station Rd, Bere Alston, Yelverton PL20 7AF, UK

Menu

The workshop will begin outside in our home potager, looking at our artichoke plants. You'll learn about raising plants from seed, cultivation, varieties, plant care and harvesting. We will then move inside (or stay outside if the weather is fine) and I will demonstrate preparation and cooking artichokes. There will be lots of opportunity for tasting and asking questions along the way - and even some plants for sale, should you feel inspired to grow your own.

Martin Swarbrick is a RHS trained gardener, a passionate vegetable grower and classically trained chef, with over 40 years experience, part of which was in award-winning country house hotels in Yorkshire.

My cookery is heavily influenced by French, Italian,  Spanish and Southern Mediterranean food cultures, with some modern twists. I am passionate about great taste and big on flavour, quality ingredients and local provenance. We don't do foams, pea shoots or whipped butter! Sorry, but we cannot cater for other specific diets or food allergies, due to nature of the event, the food we cook and the kitchen, which is not allergen free.

Access note: The garden has small sets of steps and slopes gently. There is a small flight of steps to gain access to the main house.

If you need to cancel your booking, please let us know 72  hours before the event and we will offer you a full refund. After 72 hours, we can only offer a refund if we are able to re-sell your ticket(s). If you can't come at the last minute, please do let us know so we don't lay up a place for you. Details about parking etc. will be sent prior to the event.
